Hooly forces change of plan
I've been camping for the past couple of nights. The first in the James M Robb Park, Fruita section, and then last night in Horsethief campsite near Dead Horse Point and Arches national parks. Yesterday was a particularly stunning journey - from Fruita to the national parks areas west of Moab. Quite stunning rock formations in lunar-like landscapes....this was why I chose to take the 'long way round' from Denver to Telluride.
The campsite at Fruita was a very family friendly affair....showers (if you had sufficient quarters to make them work), vending machines (if you had sufficient quarters to make them work), a lovely lake complete with interesting bird life and close enough to Fruita to pop out for a beer.
Horsethief was quite a different set up....basic toilets and that was it. Quieter though, more 'backwoods' and no traffic noise. So I was quite happy in my wee site, until the middle of the night when thr wind started up and I thought the tent was going to fly off, with me in it. It didn't, but it did make striking camp a bit more challenging.
I set off for Monument Valley about 0700 and got to the campsite I was supposed to be staying at about 1200, after many stops on the way to take in the views. There was one solitary tent, which had been pitched on a thin bit of grass just off the gravel where it was meant to be. It looked like it was clinging on for dear life as the wind whipped around it. There were no trees or bushes to provide shade or shelter and it all looked a bit too much like a car park for my liking. And the area near by, which monopolised the Monument Park 'experience' didn't seem a whole lot better. So, after looking around for a bit I made the decision to push on to my next destination - Cortez - changed my booking from tomorrow night to tonight and here I am, in the Tomahawk Motel, in a lovely comfy bed, out ofthe wind and showers of red earth. And I got to go to Wallmart again!
Tomorrow, I will head to a Telluride. There are loads of events before the big show starts on Thirsday, so I won't be short of things to do. I'm taking another long way round to get there, mainly so I can drive Highway 550, which looks stunningly beautiful and quite scary in equal measures...but who needs crash barriers anyway? I'm sure my wee Nissan will just bounce off the rocks like a basketball should I tip over the edge...
I think I'll mainly be a long way from wi-fi for the next few days, so no updates till post-festival.
Slight technical hitch with photos...
